Overview.

Manual handling injuries, lifts, pushes, pulls, sustained postures, are a leading cause of lost time in Australian workplaces. HLTWHS005 gives your team the practical skills and risk-assessment know-how to spot hazards before they become injuries, apply the hierarchy of control, and handle everyday tasks safely.

Course Outline.

This nationally accredited unit (HLTWHS005: Conduct manual tasks safely) equips participants to identify manual task hazards, assess risk, and apply safe work practices in their own workplace. The course blends online pre-learning with a hands-on practical session in a simulated environment.

  1. Identifying manual task hazards

Recognise common manual task hazards, awkward postures, repetitive movements, sustained force, vibration, and environmental factors, across healthcare, community, and justice workplaces.

  2. Assessing the risk

Use workplace risk assessment tools to evaluate the likelihood and consequence of manual task injuries, and document hazards in line with your organisation’s WHS procedures.

  3. Applying the hierarchy of control

Work through elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, and PPE controls to reduce manual task risk, and understand why elimination and good design always come first.

  4. Safe lifting, carrying and team techniques

Practise safer lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling techniques, team lifts, and how to use mechanical aids such as hoists, slide sheets, and trolleys correctly.

  5. Person-handling in care settings

Apply trauma-informed, dignity-first handling techniques for patient, client, and resident movement, minimising risk to both worker and person being supported.

  6. Reporting, recording and continuous improvement

Complete manual task risk assessment forms, report incidents and near-misses, and contribute to ongoing review of manual handling controls in your workplace.

Everything you need to know about HLTWHS005, from pre-learning and practical assessment through to payment, your issuing RTO, and what to expect on the day.

HLTWHS005 is delivered as a blended course: approximately 1 hour of online pre-learning followed by a minimum 3 hour face-to-face practical session in a simulated work environment. The face-to-face session is run at your workplace or a TIDE training venue in Perth or regional WA.

Payments for HLTWHS005 are processed securely by ABC First Aid (our auspicing RTO) via their Stripe payment gateway when you book online. Group bookings and invoiced payments for workplaces are also available, contact info@tideeducation.com.au for a quote.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Learners will, however, need English language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills sufficient to complete the online pre-learning, workbook, and written assessment.

Participants must be physically capable of safely performing manual handling tasks (lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling) during the practical assessment. Please let us know before the session if any adjustments are needed.

The course combines theory, hazard identification, risk assessment, and the hierarchy of control, with practical demonstrations in a simulated workplace. Participants practise safe techniques, use mechanical aids, and complete a manual task risk assessment on the day.

HLTWHS005 does not carry a nationally set renewal period. We recommend learners undertake a refresher in line with their workplace WHS policy, or whenever manual handling equipment, tasks, or risks change in their role.

Learners are assessed via a short written theory component and a practical skills demonstration in a simulated workplace. To be deemed competent, participants must correctly identify manual task hazards, complete a manual task risk assessment form, demonstrate safe lifting, carrying, and team-handling techniques, and apply the hierarchy of control. On successful completion, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is issued by ABC First Aid (RTO 3399).

Please note: enrolment in this course does not guarantee a successful outcome. Competency is determined by the assessor based on your performance against the unit requirements.
