Overview.

Sudden cardiac arrest comes without warning, the confidence to act fast can save a life. This nationally accredited course teaches you to perform CPR and use an AED in line with the latest Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Taught by experienced healthcare professionals with real-world insight.

Course Outline.

This nationally accredited course (HLTAID009: Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) covers the essential skills and knowledge required to respond confidently in emergency situations. Delivered by experienced healthcare professionals, the training is practical, hands-on, and focused on real-world application.

  1. The DRSABCD action plan and responding to an emergency

    Learn how to quickly assess and respond to an emergency scene using the DRSABCD protocol, a proven approach for managing life-threatening situations safely and effectively.

  2. Managing Unconscious Casualties

    Understand how to position and monitor an unresponsive person to protect their airway and prevent further harm until help arrives.

  3. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

    Develop the skills to perform high-quality chest compressions and rescue breaths on both adults and infants, in line with current ARC guidelines.

  4. Using a Defibrillator (AED)

    Gain confidence using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), including when and how to apply it during a cardiac arrest.

  5. Legal Issues in First Aid

    Know your rights and responsibilities as a first aider, including duty of care, consent, and reporting requirements.

  6. Infection Control

    Learn how to protect yourself and others by applying safe hygiene practices in first aid situations.

This course is delivered over a minimum of 2 hours of face-to-face practical instruction, combined with online pre-learning in a blended format. Learners complete the online theory component ahead of the practical session, then attend in person to demonstrate their skills with an experienced paramedic trainer. The online pre-learning component takes approximately 1 hour to complete and must be finished before attending the face-to-face session.

Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

Nil: all learners welcome, no prior experience required

This course includes both a theory and practical component. You’ll learn by doing, working through engaging, real-world scenarios guided by qualified paramedics.

To successfully complete the course, learners must:

  • Participate in all practical training
  • Pass a short theory assessment
  • Demonstrate effective CPR for at least two minutes on a manikin placed on the floor

Your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is valid for 12 months and should be renewed annually. 

Learners are assessed via a short written theory component and a practical skills demonstration. To be deemed competent, you must: complete the online learning, demonstrate the DRSABCD action plan, perform effective CPR for at least two minutes on a manikin placed on the floor, and respond correctly to scenario-based questions. On successful completion, you receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID009, Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, issued by ABC First Aid (RTO 3399).

Please note: enrolment in this course does not guarantee a successful outcome. Competency is determined by the assessor based on your performance against the unit requirements.

All Statements of Attainment for this course are issued by ABC First Aid as the issuing RTO.
